Women as Men

Women in movies that are portrayed as something different than the normal stereotypical women usually have the qualities of the general stereotypical male super hero. After reading some articles about feminism in the Charlies Angels movie these qualities seem to be apparent. I have never noticed that women were taking the exact same qualities they love to hate and using them against men to make themselves the dominate in the movies. Feminist need to find a different way to become the dominate or they are entirely being hypocritical. We have read these ideas in class and I am trying to further the argument. Another thing women try to do in movies is use there sexuality against men. I suppose one could say that women are just using the tools that men have created for them and turning them against them to get what they want. But in the end of the day the women will still be seen as a sex object. They may get ahead in life but it is not the equal and fair way that feminists are trying to get to. I'm not sure I know what the best way to achieve the goals of the feminists but I do know that most of these movies where women are the dominate character over male character are full of qualities and actions that would be looked down upon by the same feminist if the character was a male. So, what is the best way to portray women in movies without these characteristics and still stay the dominate character.

Hotter is Better

When it comes to women in movies and T.V shows they are always played to reach out to men. Many times the women have qualities and stories that women can relate too. It may seem that women are looked at as equal roles in movies but most successful movies always have the men being the top actor. In the successful T.V series "Charlies Angels" the girls have jobs and roles that are typically assigned to men. At the same time the girls are made to be looked at as sex objects. This allows the women to look past those little details that the men are looking for. Sex is the main thing that will get a man attention and women being strong an independent captures the women audience. Movies or shows that can do both of these simultaneously do well in the media. A women who is not typically considered attractive may have a great job and independent but men will not want to watch the movie as much as if she had all the same quality's but attractive. It may not be the right way to make movie and the actress may not be the best for the role but you cannot expect both audiences to be  viewers. Chick flick movies are directly targeted to females and they can get always with having less attractive female actresses. But most producers will want to target as many audience members as possible. Most of the time I have realized that a secondary character if female is almost always very attractive to compliment the males action as a reward.  Everything i have said i feel can be applied in the opposite corner. Men that are considered attractive get many roles unless the character is supposed to be bad looking to make the characters vibe. I feel that is weird that people like to watch the proposed "perfect" person. It doesn't make the movie very realistic to me.

Cartoon Nation

Cartoons are used as a way to enter the minds of young children without them realizing it. The creators are so good at this that it even slips past the eyes of the parents. Who ever creates the cartoon can put ideas into children's minds for the future. There are many things that kids experience that will shape their minds. Cartoons are just the easiest way because most people allow the viewing of cartoons and promote it. Yes, cartoons help kids learn right from wrong but they are learning there is either right or wrong. I'm not sure there is a way to change cartoons while still keeping the attention of the children. Cartoons are so popular because kids enjoy them and it gives the parents a little bit of  free time. Keep the concepts simple and entertaining and children will watch them. I can imagine that the cartoon world would not be every entertaining with characters having political debates and real arguments about right and wrong. Cartoons may not be teaching kids everything absolutely correct but but it will have to do until someone thinks of an alternate form of media.

Money Money Money

People get mad about corporations advertising to children. Yes it is probably wrong since kids can be made to do just about anything with a little effort. People realized a way to make money, plain and simple. That is what drive most people; money. In the same way porn may or may not be morally right but its a way to make money. No one can really be put to blame because if we all know if you found a legitimate way to make millions and didn't take the opportunity, then someone else will. Its a way to boost sales and promote economic growth but at the expense of having kids bug their parents. Society is changing drastically and its hard to see what is right from wrong if everything seems to be moving forward. Porn and child advertising ironically are some of the biggest players in the media market. I'm sure their will be another way to promote a product or a new form of media just a few years away, that will rocket to the top. As well I'm sure there will people who think that is a bad idea and should be  regulated or changed. Money will always be the swing vote for changing a big money maker. Stop making money or stop advertising to kids and brain washing. There is an obvious choice but money is what is already brain washed into our heads.

Sex and the City Unrated

Sex and the City is like a long dragged out porno where you don't get to see anything good. In almost every episode one or more person has sex. My friend told me that she doesn't recall any of them having sex with a black guy. This goes hand and hand with the lesson about interracial porn being the white MALES fantasy and not the w omens. The girls in Sex and the City do not usually want to do the same things you see in porn. Porn is defiantly based around the ideas and fantasy of men. If porn was like Sex and the City there would be no women being treated poorly or being told to do crazy things that are unrealistic or savage. Sex would be sex and that's all there would be. There is some poor that is like this and some people are into it. But the top sellers are the ones that most people do not experience in real life. They should make a Sex and the City from the view of a group of guys. Yes there will be lots of sex but honestly most of the sex would be just the same as the sex that girls in the current show are having. Not many guys ever get to actually participate in these crazy sex scenario. Porn is used to help you visualize a fantasy you might have that cannot be fulfilled.

Check Yes or No.

Most men would probably want to just ask their bride to be in the most simple and stress free way to marry them. But society has changed this idea and men are expected to do some kind of romantic proposal. A man is expected to spend massive quantities of money on a ring because the media said so. http://www.askmen.com/dating/dating_advice_60/92_dating_tips.html
Now that the women are on board with this big ring hype, the man is forced to go along with it to please his women. If he does not agree with these ideas he may be susceptible to a break up or a "No" when the question is popped.

Now that media has control over the ring, they add in ideas about the wedding. A wedding needs to be big with many people that you hardly know, and top of the line cake, dress, and reception. I personally would like to have no input on the wedding planning. My wife can decide everything, because no one can complain about a surprise party. A surprise is always good no matter what others have chosen for you. If you are not the one who made the decisions, you cant second guess choices or stress if others agree with those decisions. Media has changed the wedding to a point of embarrassment. A wedding is good no matter what, as long as you are in good company, love is in the air, and a open bar! With a open bar people loosen up an have a good time regardless of other decisions made by the bride and groom.

Chores of the House

People think that women are suppose to be inside cooking and cleaning. I think that this is not a unreasonable thought. Women usually are not asked to do the outside physical work around the house. I suppose some women would agree to go outside an mow the lawn while the man stays in and washes the dishes, but not most. Yes, there is more frequent work inside the house and women do work hard to keep a well kept house. I feel that there is a reason that women are looked at as they are. Women don't want too be looked at in this way, but most women would rather be inside doing work then outside doing physical labor on occasion. I'm sure there are women who would take the trade. Also, I'm sure that not too many husbands ask there wives to go outside and fix the roof while he vacuums the living room. This may be sexually biased but it is in the the best interest for both parties. Generally women will willingly accept the inside work as well as the men will accept the physical labor. My statement is pertaining to present day family where both parties work during the day and come home to do chores. Even thought women cooking and cleaning is looked as a stereo type and men are looked as, as making the women do as they say. I feel that the trade off is some what reasonable when distributing the chores among the house hold. Finally, when the family have children and they are of age to start doing some of the chores, mainly it is the son who will learn to do the physical chores such as mowing the lawn or stacking wood. The daughter will be asked to do inside house hold chores like that of the mother. This is how a house hold works in many house holds in today's age. This shown in movies and TV shows that revolve around a family or a house hold. This is shown every where and it is stereotypical but it seems to work for many family. If it is shown in reverse roles then it is usually portrayed as odd or negative and does not work well in the family setting.

Women Can Shoot

Many people would probably agree that guns are associated with men and being masculine. The cowboy view of men has now been lessened and girls are starting to be more into the  gun scene.  Action movies always have  women using guns and being as efficient with them as the male characters. One might say that a women who can use a gun makes them more attractive to males. But that would mean that men must be willing to give up that cowboy feel and that would take away from their masculinity. This has caught my attention when I realized the increasing number of women shooting trap at the gun range I go to regularly. Now with women using guns in the media, the whole gun world has accepted women into the figurative community. Some places that sell guns even have a women section. By seeing the increase in women at the shooting range first hand, this has made me realize that the media has successfully made the cowboy image a thing of the past. The now and future of guns is swiftly changing and making genders equal when you think about the word gun. Media is so strong that it is capable of changing a view of masculinity that has been set by the world for many generations.

One Chance Needed

Jeremy Lin is a Asian American basketball sensation who has caught the eye off the media , because of his journey into the NBA; along with his performances. Guard for the New York Knicks, from Harvard University and aspiring super star. The media has fell in love with this journey and perseverance. On top of being one of the few Asian Americans in the league, he is the first Ivy League player to enter the NBA in over a decade. Previously on two other NBA teams before getting a chance to showcase. Now that the Knicks have given him the chance to play, Lin has made the best of it. Through his first six games he has scored over 130 points alone. Dispite the medias extra attention through this stretch. The media has spread this throughout the world and bringing worth the popularity within the Asian community. The Asian community now has a new role model after the fall out of the ever famous Yao Ming. Recently a large Asian fan base has followed the new star to a game in Toronto for Asian Heritage night.

This extra median attention could be caused by playing for one of New York's biggest media markets. This will allow them to give him more exposure than other leading competitors

Drinking in the Media

When teens watch their favorite actors excessively drink and party, do you think that they will want to try and be like them? I believe that drinking is one thing that teens can do for themselves when trying to be like the super stars. Almost anyone can get a hold of some sort of liquor or beer from  a family member or friend. When a teen watches Charlie Sheen from  Two and a Half Men drink every episode, they will get the idea that drinking really won't effect them very much. Teens then watch a movie such as Beer Fest where the actors drink more beer than anyone could possibly drink without sever or lethal consequences. After having their minds altered by other shows where people excessively drink, they don't realize the risk they are taking but trying to attempt the impossible. The new web series on you tube called Epic Meal Time shows people how to make a meal that will get you drunk. This is available to any viewer and appeals to teens and young adults. If you want to get drunk why wouldn't you want to try something crazy you saw on the internet.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZDv9pgHp8Q

Even thought there are many ads out there that try to teach teens about the risk of drinking, do you really think a kid is going to listen to a boring ad over an exciting movie with there favorite actors that they look up too? Every year thousands of teen die from drinking too much because they do not know their limitations. The media does not show drinking limitations. Actors that are portrayed as the "Cool" guy usually do not show a negative response to drinking. Teens can only believe what they see an enjoy. Why would they want to think anything else? If he can do it i can do it.
